A Tale of A Thousand and One Tights Torpoint Players January 09 |
||
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and welcome to another Torpoint pantomime. The Story
Scheherazade, favourite wife of the great Caliph of Baghdad, Haroun al Raschid, told her husband a new story each night for 1001 nights, to prevent him having her executed like many a wife before her (this was all before Equal Opportunities). One of the tales of Scheherazade has never been told since the Middle Ages. Only one written account was ever made, kept in the Great Library of Damascus. This was stolen in 1192 during the Third Crusade by Sir Denzil de Wilcove, and lay undisturbed in the family?s vaults for centuries. It only came to light last summer when a penurious descendant of Sir Denzil?s offered it to a Jumble Sale at the Band Hut. The Players bought it, translated it from the Arabic (thanks, Betty) and now present it as their 2009 pantomime: A fabulously rich Princess in Samarkand marries a handsome young man from the bazaar. They are set to live happily ever after when a wicked wizard turns up. He wants the secret of her wealth, and kidnaps her. Her young husband tries to rescue her, but it all ends tragically as all three fall into the Blue Waterfall of Eblis However, the Waterfall is a magic place The Princess and her husband are only asleep. They will awake one day when a young boy and girl just like them pass through the Waterfall. But there is a nasty relative of the Wizard who knows this, and seeks a boy and girl to take to the Waterfall so that he can find the secret of the Princess?s great treasure And this is where the story really begins
